As the first Cuban to join the team at ISLA, Jes brings a unique and vibrant cultural flair to the community. When not at home with their two sons and husband, you can find Jes painting with the willows or swinging in a hammock by the beach. As a first-generation, non-traditional student, Jes proudly holds degrees in Creative Writing, Liberal Education, Information Architecture, and Jazz Vocal Performance, and is currently pursuing a Teaching Licensure in Special Education and a certification in Equity and Inclusion. Passionate about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Jes believes that DEI is a journey, not a destination. They are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. With a certification in user experience design and web accessibility, Jes has worked with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. During this time, they have been instrumental in advancing the Equity 2030 initiative, enhancing student success technologies, contributing to open educational resources, and exploring the responsible use of generative AI services through state research programs. Recognizing the need to address equity issues earlier in the educational journey, Jes championed the integration of the Equity 2030 initiative into ISLA’s framework. They hope their forward-thinking approach, combined with ISLA's revolutionary community, will help bridge gaps and create more opportunities for all students. Jes is committed to creating lifelong learners and making a positive impact within our community.
